Zwölftontechnik ist eine Methode der bewussten kompositorischen Anwendung aller zwölf Töne des gleichstufig temperierten Tonsystems, in der Regel unter dem Anspruch der tendenziellen Gleichberechtigung aller Töne (Atonalität), wodurch die Zwölftontechnik die Rolle der Tonalität als traditionellem musikalischem Ordnungsprinzip übernimmt. Da diese bewusste Anwendung ebenso wie das Hörerlebnis sehr unterschiedlich sein kann, ist Zwölftonmusik somit kein Musikstil oder eine Musikrichtung, sondern sie bezeichnet eine dem Musikstück zu Grunde liegende Denkweise oder Kompositionsmethode.
